2 simple steps for solving word problems.
People often think to read the problem from beginning to end as the best 1st step in solving a word problem. In math, that is not always the best idea. Because math is its own language which uses English words (if you speak English) many of the words have nothing to do with the question.
Here is how it is usually taught:
Read the problem thoroughly. Then go back and look for key words to solve the problem. Come up with a plan and then solve the problem.
The problem with that is simple. You have not dealt with the ture 1st step in solving a word problem. That step is “what is the question” that you are answering.
Simply put, find then question first. It is usually not at the begining of the problem but rather the end.
The 2 simple steps for solving word problems:
1) Find the question!
2) Answer the question!
Most people spend time trying to figure out the important information or what the problem is about to the point that they tend to make up their own question about the problem or just be completely confused!
