math is a language because it is a system of communication and use of sounds or symbles. 2.how is math language like a dog language? math language is like dog language because only certain words have a meaning at all.

    (1. Why is math a language?
    A. Because like english math has a system and you communicate like when you go to a grocery store they tell you how much money they owe you and how much you gave them and we use the sounds and conventional symbols. Because you can say out loud 1+2=3.

    (2. How is math like dog language?
    A. Because dogs only hear the important things like in math where we only need the important things instead of all the blah blah blah blah blah!

  3. I entered the information but when I clicked on Submit it displayed an error page indicating I need an email and website filled in. I went back to the previous page and all my data was deleted.

  4. My Dad saw me enter the correct answers, he is the one typing in the replies so I can move along to the next section.

  5. 1.
    Why is math a language?
Math is a language because it meets all the criteria of the definition of a language.
    2.
Why is math like dog language?
Dogs only understand a few important words, but they use the ones they know to get the meaning of the sentence. It is the same in math. So, when you learn a few words, you will be able to understand the language.

  6. 1)What is the difference in meaning between “less than” and “is less than”?
“IS less than” means that it is less than right now. Just, “Less than” means it is not less than right now.
2)Write a sentence that uses the words at most meaning is less than or equal to.
Jack walks up to his father and sais.’”I am only going to do “at most” the totall of all my school work.”His father sais,”Then “at most” am I going to let you have 3 hours of play time.”
3)Write a sentence that uses the words at least meaning is greater than or equal to.
Jack changes His mind and sais,”I will “at least” do my school work.” His dad replies by saying,”Then I will “at least” give you 3 hours of play time.”

  7. 1)What is the difference in meaning between “less than” and “is less than”
“is less than means right now and less than means it is not right now.
2)i’ll will give you at most 5 dollars for a snack and drink.
3)i’ll give you at least one slice of pizza.

    2. Why is math like dog language?
Math is like dog language because in dog language, only some words are important and have meaning. It is the same way with math.

  9. Calvin I. said:

    1. What is the difference in meaning between “less than” and “is less than”?
“Less than” is subtraction, but “is less than” has nothing to do with subtraction.
    2. Write a sentence that uses the words “at most” meaning “is less than or equal to.”
I will spend at most $4 for a pack of gum.
    3. Write a sentence that uses the words “at least” meaning “is greater than or equal to.”
I want to be at least 182 years old before I get my first set of dentures.

  10. 1. why is math a language? Because it is a systematic means of communication by sounds and symbols.
    2. How is math like dog language? Because only some words/symbols are important and have a specific meaning.

  11. Bethany E. said:

1/ What is the difference in meaning between “less than” and “is less than”?
Is less than means right now and less than is in the future or in the past.

    2) Write a sentence that uses the words at most meaning is less or equal to.

“Abigal had 10 cents and her friend sydney had 15 cents wich made 25cents which could buy them 1 peice of bubblegum at most.”

    3) Write a sentence that uses the words at least meaning is greater than or equal to.

“There were at least 40 people on the plane.”

    Bethany E.

  12. What is the difference between a RATIONAL and IRRATIONAL number?
Rational means it is predictable.(You know what is going to come next.)
Irrational means it is unpredictable.(You don’t know what is going to come next.)

  13. Bethany E. said:

    1) What is the difference between a rational and irrational number?

    A. Rational numbers are like 1/3 and 2.5 and Irrational numbers are the square root of 12 and pie (dont have those symbols =))

    Bethany E.

  14. 1)Why does it matter whether the ”x” is first in the translation of,”8 less than a number is 24?”

a)It matters whether you put a ”variable” like ‘x’
in the beginning of an algebraic problem or not because, 8 less than a number is ”x-8=12” not ”8-x!”

  15. What is the differance between rational an irrational numbers?

Rational numbers are predictable and irrational numbers are unpredictable.

  16. Joshua Buck said:

1)Why is adding integers like “gains” and “losses?”

a)Adding integers is like “gains” and “losses” because, for example;+7(positive seven) is “gaining”
    and -7(negative seven) is “losses.”

  17. Giselle I. said:

Sorry. I accidentally posted this on the Algebra place instead of Pre-Algebra! I just found out now. So here are all the questions.

    1. What is the difference between “less than” and “is less than”?
If you say “4 less than 6″ that would mean 6 minus 4. But “4 IS less than 6″ would be simply saying that 4 is a smaller number than 6.

    2. Write a sentence with the phrase “at most” in it.
The person ran 1 mile, at the most! (I guess he’s not much of a runner.)
    3. Write a sentence with the phrase “at least” in it.
I really don’t know how to answer this question; give me AT LEAST a few more days!!!

    1. What is the difference between rational and irrational numbers?
_Rational numbers are predictable because you know what is coming next, like .333. Irrational numbers, which is the opposite of that, is unpredictable, like pi. Also rational numbers are numbers that can be a fraction or repeating or terminating decimals, while irrational numbers cannot.

  18. What is the difference between a rational and irrational number?

Rational and irrational numbers are opposites. Rational numbers mean that they are predictable and irrational means that they are not. I can predict what comes after 0.0_
(It is zero). That is rational.
But i can’t predict what comes after this.
    3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510
    58209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679 8214808651 32823066470938446095505__… π (Pi)
    That is irrational.
Also numbers that can be a fraction or repeating or terminating decimals are rational numbers while irrational numbers are numbers that do not repeat or terminate. Also, irrational numbers can not be a fraction.

  19. Why does it matter if the “x” is first in the translation of 8 less than a numbr is 24?

This matters because 8 is less than 24,it’s like “x-8=24″,and it dosnt go”8-x”

  20. Giselle I. said:

    1. Why does it matter whether the x is first in the translation “8 less than x is 24″?
Because in subtraction it is important which is first, unlike addition, and it means take away this much from another number. If you switch that, the answer will most likely be different!
Example: 9 less than x is 18. x is 27. So it would look like this: 27 – 9 = 18. If you didn’t put the x in front then it would be 9 – 27, and that would get a very different difference.
So it is important to put the x first when you are supposed to unless you want the answer to be something else.

  21. Why does it matter whether the “x” is first in the translation of 8 less than a number is 24?

Well, it matters where you put the numbers in subtraction. If you did it backwards, it would be:

    8- ? = 24
    ? = -16

That works! But it is a different answer. It is not the same as:

    ? – 8 = 24
    ?=32

It matters because if you don’t obey the math rules, then you will get the wrong answer.
So make sure that it is x-8, not 8-x.

  22. Erin Garrett Chris said:

How do you determine a midpoint?

    • Hi Erin.
A midpoint is the point in the middle. Think of 9 being between 8 and 10.
To find a midpoint you add the two numbers and divide by 2.
If it is the midpoint of two points like (4,1) and (-2,3) just add the x’s together and divide by 2 and do the same for the y’s.
      That looks like (4 + -2)/2 =1 and (1 + 3)/2 = 2.
So the midpoint of (4,1) and (-2,3) is (1,2)

      Have a great weekend!
      Mr. D

  23. Why is adding intigers like gains and losses?
Because when you add things you are gaining things,
and when you subtract things you are loseing things.

  24. 1. Why is adding integers like gains and losses?
Gains are basically the same as adding. You gain something, and add it to what is already there or what is not there. Losses are like subtracting. You lose something and take away from something.
It is easier to think of adding and subtracting as gains and losses, because gains and losses are much more familiar and you can work with them. Plus, gains and losses are in English, and adding and subtracting are in Math Language!! I think gaining is the translation of adding, and losing the translation of subtraction. So that is why adding integers is like gains and losses.
For example, you can understand gaining weight easily. You have added pounds. But usually that isn’t how you think of it. Losing weight is the same way. You subtract pounds from yourself. It’s much simpler to think of it in gaining and losing. They are basically the same as adding and subtracting, but easier to understand.

    “polynomial” is a “binomial” [(sometimes)].

  26. 1.If a “binomial” is a “polynomial”, then is a polynomial a binomial?

polynomial can be a binomial sometimes.

  29. Giselle I. said:

    1. If a binomial is a polynomial, is a polynomial a binomial?
It can be. A polynomial can mean any of them — monomial, binomial, trinomial. So it could be two. Or it could be three. Or one, or five, or seven thousand and twenty nine.

    1. In the equation -2x + 8 = -14, what is happening to the variable?
The variable (x) is being multiplied by -2 and added by 8.
    2. Why do you do the order of operations backward when solving an equation?
Because to undo what is being done to the variable you have to do the order of operations backwards (first undo addition and subtraction, then undo multiplication and division).

  30. Joshua Buck said:

    Part I:

    In the equation {-2x + 8 = -14}, what is happening to
    the variable?

In the equation {-2x + 8 = -14}, (X) which is the variable, is being [multiplied] by [-2].

    Part II:

Why do you do the order of operations backward when
    solving an equation?

It is going to be hard explaining this but here it is:
    When there is an equation like: (2x + 8 = 16), 2x =
2*x, which all by itself is one problem, and x + 8 is one problem. So you add first then multiply.

I’m not sure if this is the correct answer or not, so
like I said, this whas a hard question to answer.
Mr. D Math, tell me if this is the correct answer or
not, either this Monday or leave a reply so I can answer it correctly.

Test- It is divisible by 3 and 5.

Example- 90-ends in 0 and 9+0=9 which is divisible by 3.

  33. My number is 21.

TEST- the number must be divisible by three (if the sum of the number is divisible by 3) and by 7 (if you take the last digit off, double it and subtract it from the number – you might have to repeat this step – and the answer is divisible by 7) it is divisible.

    EXAMPLE-212,121

212,121 is divisible by 21 because if you add all the digits together you get 9, and if you put 212,121 and take off the last digit and etc. you get 30,303, which is divisible by 7.

    • OOPS! I mean If you take off the last digit etc. You get 21, not 30303. hehe sorry about that.

  34. Joshua B. said:

    My number is 12.

TEST:Must be divisible by 6 or 2. (Must be even.)
(Add last two digits together, the SUM must be divisible by 6 or 2.If there is more than 2 digits in the number you are trying to divide by 12, add the last two digits and add the first to it.)

    Example: 144 Is divisible by 12 because you add 4 + 4
which = 8, add the 1 in the beginning of the problem,
    18! 18 is divisible by 6 and 2.
Here’s another example:108 is divisible by 12 because
    0 + 8 = 8, add 1; 18 is divisible by 6 and 2.

  35. Giselle I. said:

    Number: 96

Test: Has to be divisible by 8 ( the last 3 numbers have to be divisible by 8)
and 12 (has to be divisible by 3 — the sum of the numbers are divisible by 3 — and 4 — the last 2 numbers are 00 or divisible by 4).

    Example:
672 is divisible by 96 because first, it is divisible by 8.
    Second, 6 + 7 + 2 = 15, making it divisible by 3.
And third, 72 (the last 2 numbers) are divisible by 4.

    1. Explain how to change a mixed number into an improper fraction.
Step 1: Multiply the denominator (the bottom number) of the fraction to the whole number.
Step 2: Take the product and add it to the numerator (the top number) of the fraction.
Step 3: Take the sum and put it over the original denominator and that is the improper fraction.

    2. Explain how to change an improper fraction into a mixed number.
Step 1: Divide the numerator with the denominator.
Step 2: If there is a remainder, put that over the original denominator of the fraction that was divided.
Step 3: Put the quotient and the new fraction (the remainder and the denominator) together, and that is the mixed number.

  70. 1. Why is math a language?
Because it communicates in sounds and symbols.

    2. Why is math language like dog language?
Because we only know half of what they are saying.

    • Hi Laura

I like your answer to the dog language questions. We will looking at that half this that we don’t know what we are saying!

      Mr. D

  72. Mr.D math are we doing 1.1 1.2 and 1.3 this weak

  73. Q1. Why is math a language?

A1. Because in math there are various ways to communicate. Weather it’s through numbers, symbols, or actual words, you cant use one without the other. Just like if I were to attempt to speak without any facial expressions it would be hard for the other person to tell what emotion I’m feeling.

Q2. Why is the math language like dog language?

A2. Because cretin things have no meaning what so ever. Therefore they do not kneed to be explained for the whole problem to be understood and answered.

  104. 1. Why is math a language? Math is a language because it uses conventional symbols to communicate with. 2. Why is math language like dog language? Math language and dog language are similar because they both have different words that mean something while other words mean nothing in those languages.

  105. Answer these questions:

    1) What is the difference in meaning between “less than” and “is less than”?
“is less than” means its less right now at this moment right now.
“less than” is just less that not now not ever
    the difference: when its happening

    2) Write a sentence that uses the words at most meaning is less than or equal to.
“Hi my name is Doug and i will (squirrel!) “at most” mow your lawn for $25 bucks” says Doug to the old man. The old man replies “if you mow my lawn i will “at most” give you $25 dollars.”

    3) Write a sentence that uses the words at least meaning is greater than or equal to.

+ plus + (positive plus positive)
add the numbers and keep the answer positive.

    -plus –(negative plus negative)
add the numbers and keep the answer negative

-plus + or -plus + (negative plus positive )
subtract the numbers and give the answer the sign of the bigger absolute value.

  133. Why is adding integers like gains and losses?

Because you have a loss of 2 and a gain of 5.
It would be -2 – 5 (negative two minus positive five.)
And this is a gain of 3. The negative is the loss and the positive is the gain.

  134. Rational numbers – predictable
    Irrational numbers – unpredictable

  135. Why is adding integers
    like gains and losses?
the negative is a lose and the positive is a gain. -3+8 you lose 3 and then gain 8.

  136. + plus + (positive plus positive)
    > add the numbers and keep the answer positive

    - plus – (negative plus negative)
    > add the numbers and keep the answer negative

    - plus + or – plus + (negative plus positive) > add the numbers and give the answer the sign of the bigger absolute value

  137. Why is adding integers like gains and losses?

the rays lost 2 and gain 5 it’s -2+5 they lost 2 two games and gain 5

  138. The best way to subtract integers is not to !

Remember that Addition and Subtraction are inverse operations.

We can change the Subtraction back to an Addition problem and use the rules for addition!

    2 – 7 is the same as 2 + -7
When you use an inverse operation, you change the next number or variable
you see to the opposite of what it is. The – changed to + and the 7 changed to -7

    -2 – 7 is the same as -2+-7

Change the following subtraction problems to addition problems
      11 – -18 = 11 + +18
      -11 – 18 = -11 + -18
      11 – -18= 11 + +18
      -11 – 18 = -11 + -18

When the – sign changes, then the next sign changes too! If there is not one there, it si a + that will change to a -.

  139. Gains and losses
You lost 4 then gained 15. its like negative and positive!

  140. Why is adding integers like gains and losses?
Because you have a loss of 2 and a gain of 5. Its like someone eating at a buffet.
You get a gain of food, but then you upchuck some of it, so you have a loss of food.

  150. What is the difference between a rational and irrational number?
    rational mean predictable.
    irrational means unpredictable.

  151. Why is adding integers like gains and losses?

    adding integers is like gain 3 + 15 = 18

    subtracting integers is like losses 20 – 130 = -110

    -100 + 40 = 140 thats gains and losses.

  152. Q. Why does it matter whether the “x” is first in the translation of 8 less than a number is 24? A. It matters because, 8 less than a number really means, the number, less than eight is twenty-four ( x-8=24). If the x came after the eight, then it would mean 8 less than a number is 24.

  153. Why doos it matter whether the “x” is first in the translation of 8 less than a number is 24?

The “x” matther first in the translation of 8 less then a number is 24 because if you think about your age (above 8) minus the 8 it would make sense but if you put 8 before the “x” is 24 then your problem would be a negative.

  154. Why does it matter whether the “x” is first in the translation of 8 less than a number is 24?
because your age minus 8. you have to put the x first or else if u put the x second the answer would be negative.

  155. Why is adding integers like gains and losses? Because a gain is going up, like positive numbers and a loss is going down, like negative numbers.

    polynomial–Something with terms

What are like terms in Algebra? When the variable and exponet of the variable are the same!

Like terms in Algebra can be added because you are counting the same thing:
    3x + 5x = 8x

2x + x = 3x -Why? Because the are like terms and “x” is one.

2x + y = 2x + y -Why? Because they are not like terms so the answer is the same.

    a + b = a + b -Why? a and b are not like terms.

4×2+ 5×2= 9×2 -Why? They are like terms so they can be added.

2xy2–8xy2+ 4xy2= -2xy2 -Why? They are like terms so they can be added.

3a3b –4ab3= 3a3b –4ab3 -Why? They are not like terms so they can’t be added.

    • Hi Jessica,

you are on a right track. I would only add that a term is either a number or a product of a number and has one or more variables. Such as 6xy. Here the numerical part of the term is 6, and the term variables are x and y.

Polynomial is something with terms…good job :-) It is an expression which is the sum of terms in the form ax^k. For example: 2x^4 – 7x^3 – 5x + 1 (the symbol ^ means raised to a power)

      Everything looks great! Good job

    2xy2+-8xy2+4xy2
    -8xy2+2xy2=-6xy2
    -6xy2+4xy2=-2xy2
    10) 3a3b-4ab3=3a3b-4ab3 Why?
Because they are not the same so they stay as they are.

  187. 1) What is a factor? A divisible part of a number or expression.
Divisible means something that can be divided with no remainder.

    5) What is a composite number? A composite number is a number that can be divided by more than one and itself.
    6) Tests for divisibility

    2
The number being divided must be even (the last digit)
12, 24, 30 and 100 can all be divided by 2 because they are even numbers

    3

If the sum of the digits can be divided by 3, then the number can be divided by 3 too
42 can be divided by 3 because
    4+2 = 6 and 3 goes into 6, so 3 goes into 42

    4

If the last two digits of the number can be divided by 4, then the number can be divided by 4 too
124 can be divided by 4 because the last two digits 24 can be divided by 4, so 4 goes into 124

    5
The number must end in 5 or 0
25, 130, 205 all end in either 5 or 0, so 5 can go into them

    6
The number must be even and divisible by 3
84 can be divided by 6 because 84 is even and 8+4=12 which makes it divisible by 3

    8
If the last three digits of the number can be divided by 8, then the number can be divided by 8
1888 can be dividedby 8 because the last three digits 888 can be divided by 8, so 8 goes into 1888

    9
If the sum of the digits can be divided by 9, then the number can be divided by 9
756 can be divided by 9 because 7+5+6=18 and 9 goes into 18, so 9 goes into 108

    10
The number must end in zero
20, 300, 40,50 can all be divided by 10 because they all end in zero

    25
The last two digits must end in 00, 25, 50 or 75. Think of money!
    225, 300, 1475 and 950 all end in either 00, 25, 50 or 75

    7) This is my own rule
    11
The last two digits must be the same
22, 33, and 111 can all be divided by 11 because their last two digits are the same

    • The rule you have will only work up 99.

here is one for 3 digit numbers and 11.

If the number in between is the sum of the numbers on either side then it is divisible by 11

      example

      253

      2 + 3 = 5
      5 is in the middle
so it is divisible by 11.

What is really cool is the the 2 and 3 make the number 23 and 23 * 11 is 253

Divisible means something that can be DIVIDED with no REMANDER.

The rules you are about to see can tell you very quickly if any number can be divided by

    NUMBER DOING TEST DIVIDIDING

2 12, 24, 30 and 100 can all be divided by 2 because they are even numbers

    3 42 can be divided by 3 because 4+2 = 6 and 3 goes into 6, so 3 goes into 42

4 124 can be divided by 4 because the last two digits 24 can be divided by 4, so 4 goes
    into 124

    NUMBER DOING TEST DIVIDING

    5 25, 130, 205 all end in either 5 or 0, so 5 can go into them

6 84 can be divided by 6 because 84 is even and 8+4=12 which makes it divisible by 3

8 1888 can be divided by 8 because the last three digits 888 can be divided by 8, so 8
    goes into 1888

    9 756 can be divided by 9 because 7+5+6= 18 and 9 goes into 18, so 9 goes into 108

    NUMBER DOING DIVIDING

10 20, 300, 4050 can all be divided by 10 because they all end in zero
    25 225, 300, 1475 and 950 all end in either 00, 25, 50 or 75
